When is Hurricane Season?
For the Atlantic Ocean, it’s June 1 to November 30, but the major spikes in hurricane activity occur between August and October.
On average, September is the most active month and May is the least active month for hurricanes worldwide.
It’s OK to Travel During Hurricane Season
Though hurricane season can fall within your travel plans, it doesn’t have to be a deterrent. Since 1968, there have been an average of 2.4 major hurricanes per year (four in 2016). So the odds of one affecting your destination are slim, though it’s worth noting that the North Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea are most susceptible to tropical storms.
If you’re not overly worried about traveling during hurricane season, you can usually find pretty good prices and less crowds in these areas as well.
Watch the News
You still should pay attention to the weather in the area to which you are traveling. Hurricanes take time to build, so you will have several days or weeks of advance notice before a storm is even imminent, so watch the news and act accordingly.
The National Hurricane Center will provide you information on any storm and is a great resource for travel planning.
Weather apps such as Weather Underground and The Weather Channel are also valuable resources during such times. Make sure you get alerts to your phone during your trip.
Evacuate Immediately
If a tropical storm is approaching, the city may call for an evacuation. The longer you wait, the more dangerous the situation becomes. Give yourself plenty of time to get through traffic, follow the evacuation routes and make sure you have gas and supplies.
Bring an Emergency Kit
If you can, you’ll want to have some of the following just in case:
- Water
- Flashlight
- Radio
- Extra batteries/portable chargers
- Extra cash
- Non-perishable food
- Blankets
Travel Insurance
This is a good reminder that unpredictable does happen, making travel insurance a good option if you are worried about the weather in the area.
Although you don’t have to completely avoid traveling to destinations affected by hurricane season, staying informed and having back-up plans in place will help just in case a storm is coming.
