Put on some walking shoes and grab a rod. You don’t need a boat and you don’t have to go far to do some wade fishing during your next Bamboo Beach Club Resort visit!

Wade fishing is a fun, relaxed, easy way to while away a beautiful Florida morning or evening (ideal fishing times are early morning and dusk), and it’s great for beginners or experts.

Walking through knee-deep water, casting as you go, is an easy and effective way to catch everything from flounder to snook. Wade fishing…is ideal…in an area such as St. Petersburg/Clearwater. -Vist St. Pete/Clearwater

What You’ll Need

  • Tide chart
  • Spinning rod rigged with 12-pound test line
  • Basic artificial lures: top-water plug, gold spoon and some assorted jigs
  • Hooks
  • Split shot
  • Floats (if using live shrimp.)

Common Catches

The most common catches (or the “big three”) are trout, redfish and snook.

Most marine species, from stone crabs to bonnethead sharks, spend some portion of their life cycle in the vast meadows of sea grass that you’ll find in the sheltered waters of the bay, Intracoastal Waterway and the back side of our barrier islands. -Vist St. Pete/Clearwater

Where to Fish

There are a LOT of great spots for wade fishing all over the Clearwater/St. Pete area. Here are some of the most popular.

Fred Howard Park
Fred Howard is great for big fish, including tarpon.

Honeymoon Island State Park
Honeymoon Island is particularly known for top-notch trout and snook fishing.

Clearwater Beach and Pass-a-Grille Beach
These spots are especially excellent during the summer months.

Fort De Soto Park
Fort De Soto is known for its plulmp redfish and the Spanish mackerel that congregate near the park’s twin piers.

Weedon Island Preserve
The shallow, oyster bar-riddled waters are a prime habitat for inshore fish.

The Rules

Residents and visitors alike must obtain a saltwater fishing license even when fishing from land. A special stamp is also required if you plan to keep a snook. Your local bait and tackle shops can help, or you can visit myfwc.com for licenses and permits.

Make wade fishing a tradition next time you visit the Clearwater area. It’s fun and you don’t need an ounce of expertise to enjoy it.
