Clearwater has an unusually high number of spots rumored to be haunted, and ’tis the season to find them if you’re so inclined.
If you’re staying at Bamboo Beach Club Resort this October (or anytime, these haunted destinations are here all year ‘round), check out these creepy, and sometimes downright odd, locations that are rumored to be haunted.
“The lights flicker in the adjacent dining room when off. The manager saw a black mass like a cloak walk by him one night when we was cooking around 3:20 am. We checked the cameras and his camera where he was stopped at 3:11 and did not work right until 3:21.”
The Clearwater IHOP
You read that right. The above is an employee account about the IHOP on Highway 19, which is rumored to be fraught with the unexplainable. Dark, cloaked figures brushing by cooks in the early hours of the morning, statues moving by themselves and flickering lights (when the lights are turned off) are just a few of the things employees have reported over the years.
If the spirit moves you, sit down for some pancakes and see if your bacon tries to attack.
Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park
The creep factor is strong in this one. A dilapidated abandoned house in the woods behind the garden is said to have been the scene of a grisly murder years ago.
There’s also a cemetery where shadows and unexplainable voices move freely about, and many have captured mysterious orbs on camera. The police are on the lookout for trespassers, so go at your own risk.
Don CeSar Hotel, St. Pete Beach
If any place is haunted, it’s this one. Touted as Tampa Bay’s most haunted hotel, the fascinating Don CeSar is also known as the “pink palace.” The hotel is said to be populated with the roaming spirits of its former owner and countless guests.

Ghost Tour of Downtown St. Petersburg
These 90-minute candle-lit tours start on a sweet note, departing from Sweet Divas Chocolate, but turn darker as true ghost stories, haunted mansions and hotels rich with dark and fascinating histories (like the historic Vinoy and the Don CeSar) make their presence known.
Capitol Theatre/Royal Theatre
Clearwater’s well-known theatre is home to a different kind of entertainment when night falls. Orbs have been captured on film, alarms go off unexpectedly, and the chandelier will often start swinging for no discernible reason.
During renovations in 1981, the murdered body of a former manager was found in the balcony. Although the body is long gone, many say “Bill” never left.
Crabby Bill’s Seafood
I guess ghosts have to eat, too, because they seem to like haunting restaurants. Crabby Bill’s is primarily know for the detailed accounts a couple employees gave of their paranormal experiences there, including voices they were able to record – voices of people who weren’t there.
Currently, the Clearwater location is closed for a full renovation, but due to reopen in 2017 with a brand-new three-story building.
If you’re staying at Bamboo Beach Club Resort around Halloween time, any of these would make for a memorable and creepy addition to your vacation.
